When does school start in HCMC Vietnam in 2026?

Start date for public schools Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

In Ho Chi Minh City, public schools split their return into two distinct steps: the back-to-school gathering (Tựu trường) in late August and the official opening ceremony (Khai giảng) on September 5th.

Per guidelines from the HCMC Ministry of Education, public school students return based on their grade levels:

*Late August 2026: Back-to-School Assemblies (Tựu trường)

Before regular daily classes start, schools call students back early to buy text books, adjust uniforms, meet teachers, and review class placement:

  • Transition Grades (Grade 1, Grade 9, and Grade 12): These milestone student groups report back earliest, typically around August 20, 2026. Grade 1 students are brought in early specifically to acclimate to a primary school environment.
  • All Other Grades (Grades 2-8, 10, and 11): These students return to their campuses a few days later, around August 25, 2026.
  • Preschool / Kindergarten: Young children in public nurseries do not participate in early gatherings and skip straight to the opening day.

** September 5, 2026: The Official First Day (Khai giảng)

No matter when a student goes in for their assembly, the real, nationwide academic school year formally begins with the morning opening bell and ceremonies on September 5, 2026. Regular daily instruction, grading, and coursework roll out directly following this date.

Yes, September 5, 2026, is indeed a Saturday, and public schools across Vietnam will still hold their official opening ceremony (Khai giảng) that morning.

In the Vietnamese public school system, September 5th is a sacred, unmovable date fixed by tradition. No matter what day of the week it lands on—even a weekend—schools nationwide open their gates for this mandatory event.

Here is exactly how that Saturday works and what happens next:

The Saturday Timeline (September 5)

  • Ceremony Only: Students wear their finest uniforms or traditional Áo dài, gather in the courtyard, watch performances, and listen to the principal strike the ceremonial drum (Trống trường).
  • No Regular Classes: There are no actual academic lessons, grading, or heavy coursework on this day.
  • Early Dismissal: The ceremony typically finishes in under two hours, and students are dismissed before noon to enjoy the rest of their weekend.

When Regular Classes Start (see above or below)

  • All Other Grades (Grades 2-8, 10, and 11): These students return to their campuses around August 25, 2026. (same as above)
  • Transition Grades (Grade 1, Grade 9, and Grade 12): These milestone student groups report back earliest, typically around August 20, 2026.

For hiring purposes: most public school ESL contracts/interviews cluster in the weeks right before that August 20–25 window, since schools want teachers locked in before students show up.

To Summarize this all up:

  • Students report back August 20 or 25 (depending on grade)
  • Between that report date and September 5, schools typically run orientation + some actual lessons — not just admin/paperwork. Many schools start real coursework during this window, especially secondary/high school.
  • September 5 itself is usually a half-day or even mostly ceremony-only, no real classes that day.
  • Full normal instruction kicks into gear the day after, around September 7-8.

So the sequence is: report → settle in / early lessons → ceremony (symbolic "start") → full swing. It's a bit backwards from the US mental model where the first day of school is the first day of class. In Vietnam, kids are already sitting in classrooms for two weeks before the ceremony that "officially" opens the year.
